New Sports Centre due to open 2011

New Sports Centre

ReceptionIn summer 2011 Lancaster University will open a new £20m Sports Centre located on its Bailrigg campus, next to its rugby pitches. The new centre will be open to staff students and the general public.

The state of the art centre will offer a 25 metre Swimming Pool with 8 lanes including a ‘floating floor' which can vary the depth of the pool, Climbing Wall & Bouldering Cave which has been specially designed with input from renowned mountaineer and Chancellor Sir Christian Bonington, Health & Fitness Suites, Sauna & Steam Room, Multi-functional Space, Sports Hall with 8 badminton Courts, 4 Squash Courts and Outdoor Changing Facilities.

The new centre will continue to operate a varied programme of activities currently offered by the existing Centre for Sport and Recreation. These include casual hire of facilities (badminton, netball, 5-a-side etc), instructed classes (aerobics, other fitness classes), fitness training and junior activities (sports coaching, holiday schemes).  It will also continue to deliver swimming lessons to the local community both through LEA swimming lessons and the university swimming tuition scheme.

Sustainability

The building has been designed to achieve the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) 'Excellent' rating, which sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design.

BREEAM is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.

Building Layout

The design and development process has taken two years to ensure a high-quality design which shows consideration to the surrounding area. When complete, it will be 30 percent bigger than the university's existing Centre for Sport and Recreation which was opened in 1967.
