About Us

In August 2011 the new £20m Sports Centre at Lancaster University opened its doors for business.

Located just off the A6 on the main drive up to the campus and next to the rugby pitches, the facilities is open to students, staff and the general public.

Facilities include a 25 metre Swimming Pool with 8 lanes - including a ‘floating floor' which can vary the depth of the pool, Climbing Wall & Bouldering Cave which has been specially designed with input from renowned mountaineer and Chancellor Sir Chris Bonington, Health & Fitness Suites, Sauna & Steam Rooms, Sports Hall with 8 badminton Courts, 4 Squash Courts and outdoor changing facilities for field games. There is also a state of the art, 100 station gym.

The varied programme of activities previously on offer will continue at the new Centre and will include casual hire of facilities such as badminton, netball, 5-a-side etc, instructed classes (aerobics, other fitness classes), fitness training and junior activities such as sports coaching and holiday schemes. It will also continue to deliver swimming lessons to the local community both through LEA swimming lessons and the university swimming tuition scheme.

The design and development process has taken two years to ensure a high-quality facility which shows consideration to the surrounding area.

The new centre is 30 percent bigger than the university's existing Centre for Sport and Recreation which was opened in 1967. The building has been designed to achieve the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) 'Excellent' rating, which sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design. BREEAM is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings and has become the de facto measure used to describe a building's environmental performance.
